Spain is one of the founding countries of the Eurovision, and one of the BIG-4 countries paying the lion share of the total participation fee. However, the interest towards this competition displayed by the regular citizens is minimal, testified by unconvincing results achieved by Spain at Eurovision during the last several years. With that, each year the competition is accompanied by a big number of scandals, which are much more of an interest, than the competition itself which the Spanish people are now tired of.
A bright example is the recently known fact of persecution of Azerbaijan’s citizens, who dared vote for Armenian duet Inga and Anush at Eurovision-2009, by the Ministry of National Security of Azerbaijan. For us Europeans, such interference from the state into an independent singing competition seems ridiculous and absurd. But for bathing in oil bucks Azerbaijan this has apparently become an issue of national security. There is no other explanation why citizens are summoned for interrogations, and the media has labeled them traitors, enemies of the nation – right in the best traditions of the Soviet propaganda.
Activities or, rather, inactivity of EVC also seem quite unclear – absence of any sanctions against a country, which has violated the rules of the competition twice. To remind, up to now there has been no official information on possible punishment that Azerbaijan will sustain after blacking out Armenia’s number during broadcast of Eurovision 2009, and violating the basic rules of the EVC. And here you go – now the second scandal around unrightful actions of this country towards Armenia does not receive any comments from EVC.
It is possible that such a loyal policy in regard of Azerbaijan is conditioned by a bigger financial support provided by this country to the competition, than Armenia’s. On Azerbaijan’s initiative, in 2010 in the country’s capital city Baku, Eurovision Dance Contest will be take place. To remind, this contest was supposed to take place this year, but was canceled owing to lack of interest from participating countries of Eurovision.
So it comes out that it is possible to turn a blind eye to arbitrariness of a country with which the management of EVC finds it more beneficial to cooperate financially. Watching all this, unwillingly you pose yourself a question: why does Spain need a competition where money matters more that talent and honesty, as well as the market share is much lower than TVE would dream to have?
And you know why nothing will happen and no sanctions against Azerbaijan will ever take place? Because in this case a file should be initiated against us, the Spanish - we did not air the contest live, did we? And who will dare dismiss from the contest one of its chief official sponsors, one of the Big 4 (England, Germany, France, and Spain)? They will not withdraw the chief unofficial sponsor with its oil bucks either.
