'... Part of Legend of French Cinema...' Henri Verneuil would be 90, Atom Egoyan is 50
Festive events on the 90th anniversary of the French-Armenian prominent filmmaker Henri Verneuil and the 50th anniversary of Canadian-Armenian outstanding film director Atom Egoyan are due to be held within the framework of ‘Golden Apricot” Yerevan International Film Festival, the director of the festival Harutyun Khachatryan said.
As he noted, the family members of Henri Verneuil and the actors he had unveiled and made a way for them to the world of cinema will arrive in Armenia. Yerevan will showcase his film, will host jubilee evenings.
“As to Atom Egoyan, he is due to arrive in Armenia in person. I think, his 50th anniversary will be well marked here,” H. Khachatryan said.
Henri Verneuil (Achod Malakian) was born on October 15, 1920 in the Turkish city of Rodosto. Like a hundred thousands of West Armenians, the Malakians fled to France in 1924 and settled in Marseille, they moved to Paris in 1930.
He made 42 feature films, and came as a script-writer for 27 of them. He performed in 6 films as an actor. He was nominated for Oscar for the Prize for Best Writing, Motion Picture Story for: Le mouton à cinq pattes (1954). In 1954 he won a prize at Locarno International Film Festival for Le mouton à cinq pattes. Another nomination includes a Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964. He also won César and Academy Award of the National Academy of Cinema, France for Mayrig in 1991.
Henry Verneuil died on 11 January 2002, Bagnolet, Seine-Saint-Denis, France. Former French President Jacques Chirac said: “Verneuil is a part of the legend of the French cinema.”
His filmography includes: Le Mouton à cinq pattes (The Sheep Has Five Legs), Cent mille dollars au soleil (1964) Mélodie en sous-sol (1963), Le Clan des Siciliens (The Sicilian Clan) (1969), Mayrig (Mother) (1992).
Atom Egoyan was born in 1960 in Cairo. As a three-year-old boy, his family moved to Canada and settled in Victoria.
His films were shown and won prizes in a number of festivals.
