European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on Friday urged EU member states to agree a standby aid package for Greece as soon as possible and said the assistance should involve bilateral loans.
In a short statement, Barroso said the 16 countries that share the euro single currency should make coordinated, bilateral loans to heavily indebted Greece, saying such a mechanism would not violate eurozone rules against bailouts.
