Russia and Ukraine edged toward compromise over a gas supply deal during a visit by Ukraine's new Prime Minister, Mykola Azarov, to Moscow on Thursday, foreign media reported.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin urged Ukraine's "strict compliance" with existing gas agreements that Moscow still considers to be fair, although he said he would be willing to discuss prices.
"We agreed that no issue is closed to us," Putin said.
Azarov told his Russian counterpart that Ukraine would pay in full for March gas supplies from Russia by the April 7 deadline, even though the new government in Kiev does not support the existing deal.
