Turkey and Russia didn’t sign any deal on terms “South Stream” pipe line construction, Russian media reported. It’s reported that irrespective of them to assure earlier, Ankara and Moscow didn’t agree upon the terms to transfer Russian-Italian gas pipe line through Turkey’s exclusive economic field.
According to “Komersant”, 17 deals have been signed during Dmitry Medvedev’s visit which suppose about $30 billion Russian investments into Turkish market. They include $20 billion for the project to build a power station in Turkey. “Turkey’s generosity should have forced Ankara to approve “South Stream” construction, but the Turkish side rejected it,” Russian Komersant writes.
“Vremya Novosti” Russian paper writes that at the same time Moscow was unwilling to make any concession. “Ankara didn’t get any advantage from Moscow – gas price reduce or approve to re-export,” Russian paper writes, adding that possibly after two years of unsuccessful negotiations Turkey and Azerbaijan have finally agreed upon gas supply deal, which is supposed to be signed next week.
This kind of ineffective information for the Russian side gave rise to concerns in the Russian political ruling clique, as well as feeling of satisfaction. The thing is that Moscow finds water way through Ukraine as alternative to “South Stream” and has resumed practical steps related to this.
Regarding the redistribution in the Turkish market, particularly the increase of Azerbaijan’s gas in case of reducing the level of Russian gas, Russia isn’t significantly alarmed with it. The supply of Azerbaijani gas in Turkish market makes the rival project of “South Stream” “Nabucco’s” perspectives more uncertain and dark.
