The American authorities are planning to sue British Petroleum for the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the subsequent environmental disaster. If found guilty of negligence, BP will have to pay 4 thousand 300 dollars for each barrel of oil spilled.
All in all, this could amount to more than 17 and a half billion dollars. By now BP has spent about 8 billion dollars to clear the consequences of the disaster and might thus sustain losses at over 30 billion dollars.
