Mexican medallist Noe Hernandez dies after shooting

A Mexican athlete who won a silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics has died two weeks after being shot in the head in a bar, BBC reported. 

Noe Hernandez, who came second in the 20km walk, died on the way to hospital, after apparently suffering a heart attack at home.

The 34-year-old athlete was in a bar in Mexico state on 30 December when a row broke out at a nearby table.

A man opened fire, killing two people and wounding Hernandez and another man.

Mexican police are looking for three men in connection with the shootout. But no-one has been arrested so far.

The incident happened in the town of Los Reyes La Paz, in central Mexico state.

Noe Hernandez lost his left eye as a result and suffered brain damage. He had also lost most of his sight in the right eye and was being considered for a transplant.

Doctors had discharged the athlete, who was being due back in hospital earlier on Wednesday for a check-up.

Noe Hernandez became a household name in Mexico after his silver medal in Sydney.

The 20km walk was won by his teammate, Bernardo Segura.
