Yerevan style: Retrospective look (photos)

No European fashion photographer would perhaps pass many of them indifferently today, but they lived, worked and studied in the 60-70s Yerevan: a retrospective look at the not-so-far past.

The 1960s

According to stylist Armen Galyan, due to the shortage, clothing had a higher “moral” value then than it has now.

Artist and ethnographer Lusik Aguletsi

“I think the 1960s and 1970s were a bad imitation of the 1930s as everything was very primitive. Everyone was fashionable, yet similar – with high hairdos and loose dresses. Everyone imitated Gina Lollobrigida.”

The 1970s

Director of Atex Fashion Center Karina Dnoyan

“I think in the 1960s and 1970s there was no “Yerevan style” as such. In Yerevan, people were dressed just like everywhere else in the Soviet Union. But the intellectuals preferred clothes made by tailors.”

Nowdays

Armen Galyan: So many things came from that time in the past 15 years – from hairdos to bell-bottoms.
The past always seems more romantic than the present,
and therefore it might seem that young people were more stylish in the past.
