Armenia’s Aronian advances to quarterfinals of FIDE World Chess Cup

The second game of 1/8 round (Round 4) of the FIDE World Chess Cup 2017 was played in Tbilisi, Georgia, on Wednesday.

Armenia GM Levon Aronian played the longest game of the day, defeating Daniil Dubov of Russia 1.5:0.5 to advance to the quarterfinals (the fifth round) of the tournament, the National Olympic Committee reports.

Aronian will face Ivanchuk in the next round.

To note, the FIDE World Cup is a 128-player knockout with a $1,280,000 prize fund that qualifies two players for the Candidates tournament next year which decides who will be Magnus Carlsen’s next challenger.
