Police make fresh calls as opposition protests continue in Yerevan

The Armenian Police have issued fresh warnings to the organizers and participants of the opposition rally, urging them to refrain from unlawful acts. 

In a statement released on Friday morning, the Police say protesters keep blocking streets in different parts of capital Yerevan, thus restraining the free movement of citizens and vehicles.

The Police cites Article 30.6 of the Law on “Freedom of Assemblies”, under which participants of a rally are obliged not to obstruct the free access to buildings, structures, and other premises at assembly sites or adjacent to them.

It also refers to Article 32.1 of the same law obliging police officers to ensure free access to and exit from buildings and other premises at assembly sites.

The Police urge the citizens attending the rally “to comply with their obligations prescribed by law and not to hamper the performances of lawful police duties to avoid proportionate measures of legal effect for committing the aforementioned offenses”.

Meantime, the Police express willingness to support the conduct of peaceful rallies at sites where the rights and freedoms of others will not be restricted.

Mass demonstrations entered the eight day in Armenia on Friday, protesting ex-president Serzh Sargsyan’s nomination and election as the country’s prime minister.
