Campaigning kicks off for snap parliamentary elections in Armenia

The campaign for the early parliamentary elections in Armenia officially got underway on Monday, 26 November.

A total of 11 political parties and alliances are running in the snap elections scheduled for 9 December – My Step and We blocs, the Bright Armenia, Prosperous Armenia, Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaktsutyun (ARF-D), Republican, National Progress, Rule of Law (Orinats Yerkir), Sasna Tsrer, Christian-Democratic Rebirth and Citizen’s Decision Social Democratic Parties.

Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has announced his decision to take a vacation from Monday to fully take part in the election campaign. His My Step bloc is campaigning today in the second largest city of Gyumri, Talin (Aragatsotn Province), Artik and Maralik (Shirak Province) towns.

Bright Armenia, led by MP Edmon Marukyan, starts the campaign in southern Armenia, with meetings scheduled in Meghri, Kajaran, Kapan and Goris towns.

Following the call of Catholicos Karekin II, the Republican Party candidates took part in a Divine Liturgy on Sunday ahead of the campaign ‘for security, preservation of the national identity and sustainable development’, said former Defense Minister Vigen Sargsyan, who tops the party list.

The election campaign runs through December 7, with December 8 to be declared a ‘day of silence’ in which no campaigning will be allowed.
