The Seismic Protection Service of Armenia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations registered a magnitude 6.3 earthquake in western Iran near its border with Iraq at 8:37 p.m. local time (GMT 4:37 p.m.) on Sunday.
The service puts the epicentre as 21km southwest off the Iranian town of Sarpol-e Zahab at the depth of 10 km.
The tremor measured magnitude 8-9 points at the epicentre.
Local media reports about more than 500 injured in the quake.
