Yerevan court to hear appeal on dropping criminal charges against Kocharyan today

The Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction, presided by judge Gagik Poghosyan, will hear today the appeal of former President Robert Kocharyan’s attorneys on dropping the criminal charges against him, citing his immunity from prosecution.

Earlier in January, the Special Investigative Service denied the motion filed by the ex-president’s lawyers to cease the prosecution.

Today’s court hearing is set to kick off at 3pm, the defense team said in a statement.

Kocharyan has been placed in custody since December 7, 2018, pending trial. He is charged with overthrowing Armenia’s constitutional order during the March 1-2, 2008 post-election events in Yerevan, but strongly denies any wrongdoing.
