Acting chief of Armenia’s Supreme Judicial Council resigns

Interim Chairman of Armenia’s Supreme Judicial Council Gevorg Danielyan has tendered his resignation, Danielyan himself revealed in a Facebook post. He said the resignation will be effective from June 10.

Addressing the top judicial body’s members, he called for an ‘understanding approach’ to his decision, citing the absence of pressing issues in the sector.

“In addition, this shouldn't have come as a surprise to you,” he said. “At least as far as I am concerned, I find it necessary to enable the renewed and real trust-inspiring Supreme Judicial Council to embark on the implementation of judicial and legal reforms.”

Danielyan said for around a year he and Gagik Harutyunyan, the resigned chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council, managed to work hard under conditions of heavy workload and frequent “obvious fake news” on the media.

He unveiled his plans to engage in educational and research activities, not ruling out the possibility of rendering legal aid services.

Danielyan was appointed acting chief of the top judicial body after Harutyunyan’s resignation in May this year.
