Armenia’s deputy justice minister nominated as Supreme Judicial Council member

Deputy Justice Minister of Armenia Vigen Kocharyan has been nominated as a member of the Supreme Judicial Council, the Justice Ministry confirmed to Panorama.am.

5 out of the 10 members of Armenia’s top judicial body stepped down over the past month, including its Chairman Gagik Harutyunyan who tendered his resignation on May 24.

The parliament voted 107 to 4 to elect Grigor Bekmezyan as new Supreme Judicial Council member in a secret ballot on Thursday. He was nominated by the ruling My Step faction MPs.

The Supreme Judicial Council is an independent state body comprised of ten members. Five members of the Council are elected by the General Assembly of Judges, another five members — by the National Assembly.
