Armenian expert: Turkey failed to fully realize its plans in Syria operation

An Armenian expert on Iran, Vardan Voskanyan believes the Middle East saw no major shifts of forces after the Turkish military operation in northern Syria.

Speaking at a discussion entitled “The Changing Middle East and Armenia's Security Environment" hosted by Voskanapat analytical center on Tuesday, Voskanyan said Turkey managed to realize only 30 percent of its plans in Syria offensive.

According to the analyst, Turkey failed to gain control over the entire Syrian-Turkish border sought by it.

“[Turkey] sought to create a joint ‘safe zone’, which does not exist now. Turkey doesn’t hold control over this border completely, it was able to only handle its problems locally," the expert said.

According to Voskanyan, no issue can be resolved in the Middle East without Iran’s participation, since Iranians in Syria have numerous levers to influence the situation.
