Yerevan appellate court denies bail for Kocharyan

The Yerevan Criminal Court of Appeals upheld the ruling of a lower court to keep under arrest Armenia’s second President Robert Kocharyan standing trial on charges stemming from the March 2008 post-election unrest in Yerevan.

The Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction denied a motion of the ex-president’s lawyers to release him on bail on 7 November, a ruling appealed by his lawyer Hayk Alumyan to the higher court.

Presiding judge Lusine Abgaryan said the defense is entitled to appeal the ruling to the Court of Cassation within 15 days after receiving it.

Friday’s court hearing is over.
