Belarus police detain 3,000 people at protests after presidential election

Police in Belarus detained around 3,000 people at protests that erupted on Sunday following the presidential election, Russia’s RIA news agency cited the Belarusian Interior Ministry as saying on Monday, according to Reuters.

Police used stun grenades, rubber bullets and water cannon. A human rights group said one protester was killed, BBC News reported.

Long-time leader Alexander Lukashenko has won 80.23% of the vote, according to a preliminary count. Opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya has come in second with 9.90%.
