53 years ago today, the famous 'We Are Our Mountains' known also as 'Grandmother and Grandmother' was erected in Artsakh capital Stepanakert. It was built in 1967 on the top of a high hill. The monument, which became the symbol of national union, perceived as a national landmark, is made of red tufa. The sculptor is Sargis Baghdasaryan and the architect is Yuri Hakobyan.

The monument was created without plinth to symbolize its union with the mountains and the nature, as bodies are in firmly grounded on the soil to show that the Armenians belong to the land.

The looming faces of the grandpa and grandma created through geometric and schematic solutions are often compared with Big and Small Mount Ararat.

Armenia's National Gallery writes that that the erection of the monument was vehemently opposed by the Soviet Azerbaijani leaderhsip, yet its was built and still stands.
