UN Security Council to discuss situation in East Jerusalem on Monday

The United Nations Security Council will on Monday privately discuss rising tensions in East Jerusalem around al Aqsa, Islam's third-holiest mosque, Reuters reported.

Diplomats said the briefing was requested by nearly two-thirds of the 15-member council - Tunisia, Ireland, China, Estonia, France, Norway, Niger, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Vietnam.

Tensions in East Jerusalem started growing since mid-April, TASS reported. On May 7, clashes between the Israeli border police in Palestinians started near the Temple Mount and in Sheikh Jarrah district, where law enforcement officers perform eviction of several Arab families under the decision of the Israeli court, which accompanied by protest actions of the local population and fierce clashes.
