Armenian government makes ‘inadmissible mistakes’ in guaranteeing its citizens’ rights, ombudsman says

One of the key reasons for the problems with the state borders of the Republic of Armenia is that the government does not put the rights of border residents and human rights in general at the core of the discussions and decisions on the matter, Armenia’s Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman) Arman Tatoyan said on Tuesday.

"That is why the government is failing its positive commitments, making inadmissible mistakes in guaranteeing the rights of its citizens, and, first of all, the normal life of border residents,” he wrote on Facebook.

“All issues related to the state borders should not be discussed just in political and military terms, especially due to the effects of the war and amid the policy of Armenophobia pursued by the Azerbaijani authorities.

“The human rights, preliminary the rights of border residents, the normal living conditions of the border population (the rights to life, property, dignified and safe life, pursuit of happiness and other rights) must be prioritized,” Tatoyan said, adding if things proceed like this, the shortcomings and failures will only increase.

“We must not forget that democracy, human rights and the rule of law are among the key international principles of delimitation and demarcation,” he said.
