Charles Michel calls for urgent de-escalation of situation on Armenian-Azerbaijani border

European Council President Charles Michel called for urgent de-escalation of the situation and full cease-fire along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

In a post on Twitter, Michel said he held a discussion with the prime minister of Armenia and the Azerbaijani president in light of today’s developments.

“Call for urgent de-escalation and full ceasefire. Challenging situation in region - EU is committed to work with partners to overcome tensions for a prosperous and stable South Caucasus,” he tweeted.

Azerbaijan used artillery and armored vehicles to launch a fresh attack on the Armenian military positions in the eastern border section on Tuesday afternoon. There are casualties, both killed and wounded soldiers, on the Armenian side as a result of border clashes, the Defense Ministry of Armenia said, adding the intense fighting continues.

12 Armenian servicemen, including 7 contract soldiers and 5 privates, have been captured by Azerbaijani forces, the ministry noted.
