Soldier Davit Gishyan killed in Azerbaijani captivity; Armenia applies to ECHR

Armenian soldier Davit Gishyan (born in 2002) was killed after being taken captive by Azerbaijani forces, the office of Armenia’s representative before the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) confirmed on Monday.

The office has applied to the European Court over Azerbaijan’s violation of Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights, its spokeswoman Hasmik Samvelyan said.

“We appealed to the European Court this morning, stating that the prisoner of war was killed in captivity. We noted that Azerbaijan violated Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights. The application also cites Article 3, which protects people from torture and degrading treatment," she told Panorama.am.

Armenia has also demanded an interim measure against Azerbaijan before it provides information on the whereabouts and condition of Armenian captives.

Gishyan was among the 32 Armenian servicemen whose bodies were handed over to Armenia on Saturday. A video posted on Azerbaijani Telegram channels earlier showed Azerbaijani troops providing first aid to the soldier who had been wounded in the shoulder.
