Armenian parliament majority rejects opposition bid for ouster of judge Seda Safaryan

The pro-government majority in the Armenian National Assembly on Wednesday rejected the opposition Hayastan faction’s request to apply to the Constitutional Court to dismiss judge Seda Safaryan for a gross misconduct.

Only 30 deputies, all from the two opposition factions, took part in a secret vote on the motion and backed it.

MPs from the ruling Civil Contract party abstained from voting. The number of votes garnered by the opposition was insufficient for the motion to pass.

Safaryan was accused of having illegally worked as a private lawyer after formally taking over as a Constitutional Court judge on December 16 last year.
