Armenia proposes to enhance capacity of EU monitoring mission

Armenia calls for enhancing the capacity of the EU monitoring mission in the country, Secretary of the Security Council Armen Grigoryan said on Friday.

The security chief claims the number of EU observers is insufficient for monitoring Armenia’s international border with Azerbaijan.

“We propose all our partners to increase both the number of its personnel and other capacities in order for the observers to be able to carry out monitoring more effectively,” Grigoryan told reporters in the spa town of Jermuk.

The European Union officially launched a civilian mission in Armenia in February to ensure stability in areas bordering Azerbaijan. The staff numbers approximately 100 in total, including around 50 unarmed observers.

The objectives of the mission are “to contribute to stability in the border areas of Armenia, build confidence and human security in conflict-affected areas, and ensure an environment conducive to the normalization efforts between Armenia and Azerbaijan supported by the EU.”
