Tigran Avinyan elected Yerevan mayor

Tigran Avinyan of Armenia’s ruling Civil Contract party has been elected Mayor of Yerevan.

The Yerevan City Council voted 32 to 5 to elect Avinyan as new mayor at its inaugural meeting on Tuesday.

37 councilors, including 24 from Civil Contract, 8 from Republic (Hanrapetutyun) Party and 5 from Public Voice Party, were in attendance of the meeting which was boycotted by the Mother Armenia bloc and the National Progress Party.

Avinyan was the only candidate for the post.
