Three Armenian protesters remanded in custody

Five supporters of the Tavush for the Homeland movement have been charged with “hooliganism” in connection with Friday’s demonstration outside the Armenian Foreign Ministry in Yerevan that saw clashes between riot police and protesters.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Armenian Investigative Committee said that three of them were remanded in pre-trial custody, while the other was placed under house arrest.

The law-enforcement agency claimed that the five suspects swore at the police officers outside the ministry building, hurled bottles and other objects at them. One of the demonstrators also kicked the shield held by an officer.

“Their actions disrupted the calm of persons at the scene,” the statement said.

The preliminary probe into the incident is underway.
