Eight Armenian protesters remanded in custody

Twelve people are facing hooliganism and mass riot charges in connection with the protest outside the Armenian parliament on June 12 that saw violent clashes between police and protesters. Riot police used stun grenades and other forcible tactics against demonstrators, making around 100 arrests.

In a statement on Monday, the Armenian Investigative Committee said eight of them were remanded in pre-trial custody, two suspects were placed under house arrest, while another was banned from leaving the country.

The law-enforcement agency charged that the protesters swore at police officers guarding the parliament building, hurled stones, sticks, bottles and other objects at them.

“Their actions disrupted the calm of people,” the statement said.

Measures are in place to identify other persons involved in the hooligan acts.
