Samsonova ends Avanesyan’s run at Cincinnati Open

Liudmila Samsonova, the No 10 seed, defeated Elina Avanesyan 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Western & Southern Open at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Cincinnati on Friday afternoon, Tennis Majors reported.

Samsonova, ranked No 17, will next play the winner of the match between Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the No 3 seed, and Ukrainian Elina Svitolina.

In the previous rounds in Cincinnati, the Russian-Armenian knocked off China’s Xinyu Wang (6-4, 6-4) and Poland’s Magda Linette (7-6 (10), 6-1).

Avanesyan, ranked No 60, was a lucky loser in the main draw. She made the most of her opportunity by upsetting Canadian wild card Bianca Andreescu (6-4, 7-5) and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 8 seed (2-6, 6-2, 6-2). Avanesyan was officially competing as an Armenian for the first time in her career after switching from Russia.
