Expert: U.S.-Armenia strategic partnership deal doesn't include security guarantees

The strategic partnership agreement signed between Armenia and the United States does not provide security guarantees for Armenia, political analyst Suren Sargsyan has stated.

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and then U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken signed the Charter on Strategic Partnership in Washington on January 14.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Sargsyan highlighted the distinction between a strategic partnership and a strategic alliance.

“A strategic partnership is different from a strategic alliance,” the expert said. “The document we've signed does not constitute a strategic alliance. Therefore, it includes no security guarantees for Armenia, nor does it provide for U.S. arms supplies or any other assistance to Armenia."

Sargsyan described the agreement as a step forward in Armenian-U.S. relations.
