Activist accuses Armenian law enforcement of attack cover-up

Opposition activist Artur Chakhoyan has accused Armenian law enforcement officers of concealing material facts related to an attack on him.

Chakhoyan was attacked and beaten by three men on his way home in October 2023.

"I've once again been convinced that there is no justice in Armenia and the police are failing to do their job," Chakhoyan told Panorama.am after a court hearing on Tuesday, referring to the investigation into the attempted murder case.

He claimed that the criminal case was covered up, with authorities working to ensure that the facts he presented would not be investigated. Chakhoyan pointed to a specific instance where the investigator collected video footage but failed to include its contents in the case files.

"The investigator didn’t even bother to retrieve it. If this isn’t a political cover-up, what else is it?" Chakhoyan asked, emphasizing that the attack occurred just a day before Tigran Avinyan’s appointment as Yerevan mayor.
