75th Berlin Film Festival kicks off

The 75th Berlin International Film Festival has kicked off in Germany. Works from Ukraine, South Korea and others are competing for the top Golden Bear award.

Stars from around the world walked the red carpet on Thursday, the opening day. The annual event is considered to be one of the three major film festivals in the world, along with Venice and Cannes.

Nineteen films are in contention to win the Golden Bear for Best Film.

They include the Ukrainian documentary "Timestamp," which was directed by Kateryna Gornostai and depicts the ways in which the war is affecting the daily lives of students and teachers.

South Korean director Hong Sang-soo's new work, "What Does that Nature Say to You," is also among the films that have been nominated.

The Golden Bear and other prizes will be announced on February 22, one day before the festival closes.
