Azerbaijan seeks to obstruct constitutional reforms in Armenia, MP claims

A senior pro-government lawmaker on Tuesday described the Azerbaijani government's demand for Armenia to amend its constitution as an attempt to hinder constitutional reforms in the country.

Arman Yeghoyan, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on European Integration, was asked to comment on a recent statement by Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov, who claimed that Baku is waiting for Armenia to "formally renounce territorial claims against Azerbaijan" through constitutional changes.

"I consider the statement as an obstruction to constitutional reforms in the Republic of Armenia," Yeghoyan told a press conference following the EU-Armenia Parliamentary Partnership Committee meeting.

"The Azerbaijani officials are well aware of the reaction the statement will trigger in Armenia and are trying to block the implementation of constitutional reforms," the MP added.

He also emphasized that 15 out of the 17 articles in the draft peace treaty have been agreed upon by the two countries, with none of them pertaining to the constitution.
