Mérida Open Akron: Elina Avanesyan books spot in last eight

Armenian Elina Avanesyan reached the quarter-finals of the Mérida Open Akron by defeating Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-1, 6-4 on Wednesday night.

Avanesyan, ranked No 45, will face the winner of the match between Croat Donna Vekic, the No 5 seed, and Australian qualifier Maya Joint next.

Ahead of her victory, the 22-year-old Armenian won against Pole Magdalena Frech, the No 7 seed (4-6, 6-3, 6-3).
