Levon Barseghyan, President of the Asparez Journalists' Club, has been nominated to become mayor of Gyumri, Armenia’s second largest city, in the upcoming municipal elections in March.
The three parties behind the Eurovote ballot initiative, the Republic Party, For the Republic Party and European Party of Armenia, have joined forces to run together in the elections, nominating Barseghyan as their mayoral candidate.
“We are entering the election race to win and our entire campaign will be conducted in a spirit of goodwill,” Republic Party Chairman Aram Sargsyan stated on Thursday.
When asked whether they feared that, if victorious, their candidate and political alliance could face the same fate as the Balasanyan Bloc, which resigned under pressure in October 2024, Sargsyan responded, “Levon is not Balasanyan, he is Barseghyan. Pressuring him will be far more difficult.”
“We are a strong and genuine alternative, immune to any pressure,” added For the Republic Party leader Arman Babajanyan.
