Eve of Great Lent to be marked in Armenia on Sunday

The Armenian Apostolic Church will mark the Eve of Great Lent (Boun Barekendan) on Sunday.

Barekendan means The Great Living Day and signifies joy, feasting, and celebration. It refers to the Sunday preceding major fasting periods. The Sunday before Great Lent is especially significant and is called Boun Barekendan. On this day, people prepare festive dishes and organize joyous celebrations.

Barekendan, which is also known as Carnival in Western traditions, is celebrated with great splendor. Various parades, performances, and popular festivities are held, making it a grand and lively occasion.
