Armenia, Azerbaijan still far from achieving peace, MP claims

Armenia and Azerbaijan remain far from achieving peace despite the announcement of the completion of negotiations on a draft peace treaty, claims opposition Pativ Unem faction MP Tigran Abrahamyan.

In a social media post on Friday, the lawmaker pointed to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s recent statement that the level of trust in Armenia “is close to zero".

“We do not trust any of their words. Because these are not people we can trust, including today’s government,” Aliyev said during a speech at a so-called Global Forum in Baku.

“It is well known that Azerbaijan has repeatedly made disrespectful and dismissive remarks about Armenia’s current leadership. However, making such statements immediately after concluding negotiations on a peace agreement indicates that the two sides are still far from achieving peace,” Abrahamyan wrote.

“Mutual obligations cannot be effectively established in an environment of zero trust, particularly in the absence of mediators and any tangible guarantees for their proper implementation,” he added.
