Expert: U.S. realizes that possible Azerbaijani aggression could disrupt its plans

The United States is well aware that potential Azerbaijani aggression in the region could disrupt its strategic plans, political analyst Suren Sargsyan said, referring to the visit of Steve Witkoff, U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy, to Azerbaijan and the recent statement by U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz calling for the release of Armenian prisoners held in Azerbaijan.

“The unexpected "landing" of Trump's advisor on the Middle East and Ukraine, Steve Witkoff, in Baku, as well as a recent post by his national security advisor, suggests the following:

1. Trump is currently focused on ending the war in Ukraine.

2. He is also working on initiating possible negotiations with Iran or, alternatively, increasing pressure on Iran.

Any development that could disrupt these key priorities is unwelcome for Trump. The U.S. is fully aware that possible Azerbaijani aggression in the region could derail certain plans,” Sargsyan wrote on Facebook on Monday.

“Therefore, it is essential to prevent reckless actions by Azerbaijan (and Turkey) and avoid escalating tensions in the South Caucasus, especially since Turkey seeks to take a seat at the global negotiating table with its own strategic leverage. Notably, the tensions between Russia and Azerbaijan are being deliberately stoked by Turkey for this very purpose.

“As for Trump’s team’s messages concerning Armenia, the efforts of the Armenian community, lobbyists and human rights organizations are also evident in this regard. It’s important to remember that many individuals within Trump’s inner circle not only know Armenia's geopolitical position, but also have strong ties to the Armenian community and a deep understanding of Armenia's challenges.

“Trump does not want new tensions with Russia at this point. On the contrary, he seeks Russia’s support to resolve both foreign and domestic issues. That is why he currently has no interest in opening new 'fronts' against Russia,” the expert stated.
