Gyumri opposition candidate released

An Armenian court has refused to impose house arrest on Anahit Khalatyan, a 70-year-old woman who ran for the Gyumri City Council on the ticket of the opposition Our City bloc.

She was arrested along with two other elderly women during Sunday’s municipal elections in Gyumri, Armenia’s second largest city.

"Mrs. Anahit has been set free but will remain under administrative supervision," her lawyer Arsen Babayan said.

Meanwhile, her 75-year-old friend, Kima Hayrapetyan, remains in custody, pending a court decision.
