Chairman of the Bright Armenia Party Edmon Marukyan has called attention to the silence of EU leaders regarding the EU accession bill passed by the Armenian parliament in late March.
"Amid the deafening noise of the Gyumri elections, you may have overlooked a crucial detail: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas never welcomed the adoption of the bill calling for the launch of Armenia’s EU accession process in the second and final reading,” Marukyan wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.
“They clearly realize that this initiative serves domestic electoral purposes and that Armenian authorities are misleading both the people of Armenia and the European Union.
"Moreover, the failure of the EuroAlliance to clear the electoral threshold in Gyumri only confirms that Armenia’s European future is, at best, uncertain. On the other hand, EU leaders understand that Armenia's path to EU membership remains blocked. Thus, they see no reason to welcome the bill and fuel false hopes among the public,” he stated.
