Only 35% of infants under six months exclusively breastfed in Armenia

Only 35% of infants under six months of age are exclusively breastfed in Armenia, well below recommended levels. Maternal and child health are critical to the country’s future well-being, yet challenges remain in access to healthcare, especially in rural areas, the Heratsi Analytical Center reports.

The maternal mortality rate in Armenia was 25.5 per 100,000 live births in 2021-2023, with complications like hemorrhage, infections and pregnancy-related issues being the leading causes. In 2023, the child mortality rate was 9.4 per 1,000 live births, with major contributors including premature birth, birth complications and infections.

Anemia and low birth weight are significant issues, with 18.1% of pregnant women in Armenia affected by anemia. Preterm birth and anemia are major causes of low birth weight, which affects about 9% of newborns in Armenia. Malnutrition also impacts child development, with 22.3% of children under five experiencing growth stunting.

To improve maternal and child health, WHO recommends enhancing prenatal care, promoting exclusive breastfeeding and addressing air pollution.
