Aliyev: Azerbaijan will not comply with ECHR orders

Azerbaijan will not comply with the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), President Ilham Aliyev announced at the international forum "Towards a New World Order" held at ADA University on Wednesday.

Aliyev cited the suspension of the Azerbaijani delegation's voting rights in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) as the primary reason for this decision.

“If our delegation cannot attend PACE sessions and is unable to vote in the selection of ECHR judges, the court’s judgements concerning Azerbaijan will be considered invalid,” Aliyev stated. “We have been stripped of our right to vote. We haven't participated in the election of these judges and do not know who they are.”

In January 2024, PACE resolved not to ratify the credentials of Azerbaijan's parliamentary delegation, citing a failure to fulfil its "major commitments". The resolution was passed with 90 votes in favor, 76 against and 4 abstentions. In response, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry imposed entry bans on the 76 MPs who voted against the delegation’s accreditation.
