Uruguay parliament marks 110th anniversary of Armenian Genocide

At the initiative of Armenian-Uruguayan MP José Luis Satdjian, members of Uruguay’s Chamber of Representatives commemorated the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide during a recent parliament session.

Representatives from all the factions voiced their support for Satdjian’s initiative, proudly highlighting that Uruguay was the first country to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide, the Armenian Embassy in Uruguay reported.

MPs José Luis Satdjian, Ana Olivera and Pedro Jisdonian also addressed the ethnic cleansing of the Armenian population in Nagorno-Karabakh and the ongoing illegal detention of Armenian prisoners in Azerbaijan. They recalled that the Uruguayan parliament had unanimously adopted a resolution calling on Azerbaijan to immediately release all Armenian detainees.

“Uruguayan lawmakers expressed deep respect and solidarity with the Armenian people and the Armenian community of Uruguay. They also welcomed Armenian Ambassador to Uruguay Mariam Gevorgyan, who was present at the session, and commended the embassy for its dedicated work,” the statement said.
