MP slams decision to overturn acquittal of Serzh Sargsyan

Armenia's Anti-Corruption Court of Appeals has overturned the acquittal of former President Serzh Sargsyan and several others over corruption accusations.

The court granted the prosecutors' appeal on Friday, sending the case back to the lower court for new investigation.

Opposition Pativ Unem faction MP Tigran Abrahamyan condemned the court ruling as politically motivated.

"The authorities did not forgive the law enforcement officers handling the case who failed to align it with the government's political agenda and propaganda goals, nor the judge who refused to carry out political orders," the MP wrote on Facebook.

He also linked the renewed focus on the case to Serzh Sargsyan's speech at a recent Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) Council meeting, in which he pledged to continue fighting for regime change in Armenia, calling it an attempt to silence the dissent.

He stressed that neither Sargsyan nor the RPA is particularly concerned by the renewed proceedings, noting that they faced greater political pressure before.

“This is meant to suppress all those who are considering becoming politically active,” Abrahamyan added.
