Political analyst: Pashinyan's push for change of constitution must be stopped

Political analyst Suren Surenyants says Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s push for a change of Armenia’s constitution must be stopped, warning that it could undermine the country’s sovereignty and "turn Armenia into an Azerbaijani sub-state".

In a social media post on Tuesday, he pointed to recent remarks by Constitutional Court Chairman Arman Dilanyan, who said the constitution contains no territorial claims against Azerbaijan or any other country. Dilanyan also noted that the reference to the 1990 Declaration of Independence in the constitution’s preamble holds no legal weight.

Surenyants accused Pashinyan of echoing Baku demands by insisting on the remival of the reference to the Independence Declaration.

“The constitution has become part of the negotiation process, which poses a major threat to Armenia,” he warned.

Surenyants called on all political forces to block the proposed constitutional changes and announced that his party, the Democratic Alternative, will soon unveil a roadmap to counter the initiative.
