Lawyer seeks clarity on criminal case involving MP Levon Kocharyan as a victim

Lawyer Erik Aleksanyan has asked Armenia’s chief prosecutor and the chairman of the Investigative Committee for an update on a criminal case in which opposition MP Levon Kocharyan has been recognized as a victim.

"This case is widely known to the public. Footage and eyewitness accounts clearly show Levon Kocharyan being subjected to police violence," Aleksanyan said in a social media post on Wednesday.

The lawyer stressed that many witnesses confirmed the police brutality against the lawmaker. Additionally, a forensic medical examination documented physical injuries consistent with violence inflicted on Kocharyan.

"However, no police officer has been held accountable since September 2024,” he added.

Aleksanyan pointed to the recent comments of the Investigative Committee head, who emphasized the importance of forensic findings in cases of alleged police violence. “Such an expert conclusion exists in Levon Kocharyan’s case, yet it’s being completely disregarded. There are even absurd attempts to portray the injuries as self-inflicted,” he said.

Aleksanyan further emphasized that the criminal case was launched under articles related to torture, an offense which is not subject to a statute of limitations. “Accountability for the perpetrators is inevitable,” the lawyer stressed.
