Analyst reacts to Rubio's remarks about Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict risk

Political analyst Suren Sargsyan has reacted to recent comments by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding the risk of renewed conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Speaking before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday, Rubio emphasized that the United States is working actively to prevent a fresh military flare-up in the South Caucasus.

“The risk of renewed armed intervention between Azerbaijan and Armenia remains, and efforts are being made by Washington to prevent it,” Rubio remarked.

“With regard to Azerbaijan, our main focus has been to work towards establishing peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia," he said, adding that Washington is also addressing issues related to prisoners and human rights in Azerbaijan.

In a social media post on Thursday, Sargsyan highlighted Rubio’s dual role as both secretary of state and national security adviser. He pointed out that Rubio is currently leading two institutions that have traditionally held competing foreign policy approaches, yet now appear to be operating in alignment.

"Rubio has acknowledged the risk of intervention," Sargsyan wrote. “At this point, U.S. strategic interest lies in preserving relative calm in the South Caucasus as Washington continues negotiations with Tehran and Moscow. Furthermore, Trump’s portrayal of himself as a ‘bringer of peace to the world’ indicates the administration’s desire to avoid any additional geopolitical headaches, especially new armed conflicts."
