MP: Azerbaijan renews territorial claims against Armenia at Turkey conference

Turkey is hosting a high-profile international conference titled “Return to Western Azerbaijan: A Key Condition for the Supremacy of Human Rights”. The event has featured multiple statements against Armenia’s territorial integrity, opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan warns.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Abrahamyan pointed to a statement by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who said that ensuring the “safe, dignified and peaceful return of Western Azerbaijanis to their ancestral lands” is essential for upholding human rights and achieving lasting peace in the region.

“Moreover, Aliyev insisted that Armenia clarify the timing and conditions for the return of Western Azerbaijanis to their ancestral homeland,” the MP wrote.

Abrahamyan added that the Azerbaijani leadership expects the Armenian government to engage with representatives of the so-called “Western Azerbaijani community” to discuss the matter.

The deputy stressed that the speeches delivered at the event in Turkey included explicit territorial claims against Armenia, particularly concerning Syunik Province.
