• National responsibility overpowered conformism 

• Greater goals were acknowledged as more important that personal safety

• Freedom and independence remained vital, non-negotiable values

• And finally, temporary losses did not become a reason to accept the defeat but rather a driving force to carry on with the struggle. 

And the heroic battles of May became a reality.
