Armenian MP: US and Russian statements reflect geopolitical tensions beyond peace talks
MP Tigran Abrahamyan of the opposition Pativ Unem faction has commented on recent statements made by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov regarding the situation surrounding Armenia.
Speaking before the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee last week, Rubio warned of a “real risk” of an Azerbaijani invasion of Armenia, adding, “We would like to prevent that from happening.”
Meanwhile, Belousov expressed concern obout lingering tensions over Armenia’s Syunik Province on Wednesday.
“Tensions remain around Armenia's Syunik Province,” he said during a meeting of the top defense officials of ex-Soviet states making up the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).
In a social media post on Thursday, Abrahamyan stressed the statements, delivered just days apart, mark a shift from the recent wave of international optimism about an imminent resolution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict.
He emphasized that both Rubio and Belousov represent major global powers with a deep understanding of the region's military and political dynamics.
“Their warnings reflect not only the current state of Armenia-Azerbaijan negotiations, but also a confrontation between external powers in the region, which could trigger abrupt changes on the ground,” Abrahamyan wrote.
